In cyclists’ lingo, “drafting” is the process by which a group of riders reduce wind resistance by pedaling together in a straight line. Cyclists drafting off each other can maintain a rapid pace while exerting as much as 40 percent less energy than they might otherwise.

With a cycling-themed big weekend straight ahead, Calhoun County is doing much the same. On Saturday, runners and walkers can start the day with the YMCA’s Spring 5K Run in downtown Anniston. The Sunny King Criterium bike races start at 10 a.m. and run into the evening. Kid-friendly attractions crank up around midday. Hungry festival-goers can feast on fare from local restaurants while strolling along Noble Street.

On Sunday, cyclists have multiple mileage options in the Cheaha Challenge, from 26 miles all the way to 102 miles. The ride starts and ends at Piedmont’s Civic Center. A 57-mile road cycling race also starts and ends in Piedmont, giving spectators plenty to watch on Sunday.

See, like we said, drafting. Each event smoothing the way for the next and each further selling the region’s assets, particularly when it comes to a place for outdoor recreation. The Cheaha Challenge marks its 20th year on Sunday. The Noble Street Festival is in its seventh year. Both look as strong as ever.

So, consider this weekend a chance to have a good time in your own backyard. We expect plenty of out-of-town guests who will be impressed by what they see. Don’t be shy about telling them of the great things our community can do when it puts its mind to it.
