The GRCA has issued its fifth annual Green Progress Report, and it is good to see that progress has indeed been made.
Two of the highlights of the past year reveal how Alabamians and the representatives we send to Washington can do great things for us all.
First, there was the passage of the Forever Wild constitutional amendment. With more popular support than any candidate or measure on this year’s ballot, this amendment all but guarantees that future generations will benefit from what is considered to be one of the most successful conservation programs in state history.
On the federal level, with bipartisan support from Alabama’s congressional delegation, Congress passed the RESTORE Act that will direct money from future fines paid by BP and others responsible for the Deepwater Horizon spill to Gulf Coast restoration.
These were not the only accomplishments listed in the GRCA’s “Top 12 for 2012 Green List.” Green Ribbon Schools in Mumford and Talladega (Alabama’s first) were recognized. Tree plantings, scenic river trails, coastal cleanup and birding trails were singled out, as was Alabama Power Co. supplying 115,000 homes with wind power.
The GRCA website (www.greenalabama.org.) is worth a visit because it will let you know what has been done, what needs to be done, and what can be done to make us a more environmentally aware and energy-efficient state.
