ONE more reminder, guys, that TOMORROW! is Valentine’s Day and if you haven’t already done so, you need to be rounding up candles and roses.
In all the years the blonde has been “my Valentine,” that’s one day I’ve never forgotten. I’ll admit a bit of carelessness on other occasions but not Valentine’s Day.
With that said, a few things I came up with (online) about lover’s day:
• For the record, 73 percent of Valentine flowers are purchased by men, 27 percent by women. And 15 percent of our women send flowers to themselves.
• 60 percent of our roses are grown in California, most sold on Valentine’s Day. A confession here: I no longer buy roses. Last year, I bought a small potted azalea. It was red and kept its blooms for six weeks sitting on the kitchen table. Roses may last three or four days.
• Most notable Valentine’s Day was Feb. 14, 1929. That’s the day gunmen lined up seven members of George “Bugs” Moran’s gang and shot ’em dead. The gunmen were thought to be in the employ of Al Capone.
• In 1537, King Henry VIII of England declared Feb. 14 a national holiday. Today, only England, the U.S., Canada, Mexico, France and Australia observe the occasion.

Nonnie celebrated her 99th birthday with daughter Jeffie Beth McManus, who came in from South Carolina to say “Happy Birthday” to her mom.
Stephanie carries a 3.65 GPA ... and that’s off such studies as calculus, anatomy, physics, EH 101/102, and government/economics.
She is a member of the National Honor Society of High School Scholars, Mu Alpha Theta (math honor society), and secretary of the Beta Club.
Busy, busy is a word outside the classroom. She has been on the volleyball team that made it to the Elite Eight last year, to the Final Four this school year. Stephanie is All-County and All-Area in volleyball, second team All-County in soccer. You can throw in basketball and cheerleading as well.
“Stephanie is an amazing student with an intense desire to learn and reach every goal she has set for herself,” says Sandra Pullen, senior English and Beta Club adviser.
Her goal is to become a plastic surgeon.
