WEDNESDAY’S LIST ... of beans ’n greens ’n other things: * * * HER NAME is Susie Robinson Smith and she’s been my daughter-in-law for a long, long time. It is also part of the story that the older I get, more the “mothering” I get. Susie is right in there with the blonde.

Anyway, on a day when I wasn’t looking, she came by with a present — no birthday, no Christmas, no Groundhog’s Day.

“Susie brought you a present,” announced the blonde. “On the buffet.”

Looked like a pair of black gloves to me. And there they rested ’til Sunday when, over lunch, I was asked:

“Poppa, you wore those gloves yet?”

I mumbled something like “ain’t been cold ’nough, but soon’s the ice storm hits, I’ll wear ’em.”

Monday morning, summoned by son and heir for an early chore, I reached for the “gloves.” Basically, I also had mittens.

The tips of the fingers are open. Gets really cold, the “gloves” convert into mittens, honest. Flaps attached to the back of the gloves pull up and over, thereby converting the gloves into mittens.

So, if you see me doing a gravy biscuit at Jack’s along about mid-August while wearing black mittens, you can put it down to keeping peace in the family.

* * * SPECIAL PEOPLE: As of Saturday, Roscoe and Joyce Sparks Terry will have been going steady for 57 years, dating back to Feb. 23, 1956, when they stood in front of a preacher and said “I do.”

But the Rev. Woodfin and Dot Grove can play a bit of ups-anniversary-ship in that department.

Woodfin and Dot were honored this past week at the annual Valentine party at First United Methodist Church in Anniston. The recognition came off their 70th anniversary.

The Rev. Woodfin, among other stops in his ministry, was senior pastor for 12 years at First United. Woodfin and Dot are both in their 90s.

And both couples have a very good shot of making it to the finish line, too.

A study in Time Magazine recently stated that only half (57 percent) of married couples make it to their 15th anniversary. But after that, odds are heavy they will remain married “Until death do ye part.”

There is good news out there, huh?

* * * AND A special nod toward Hulon Ogle who will be 90 this Friday.

In a recent column, I told you about Hulon and wife Modena renewing their wedding vows after 70 years of marriage.

* * * JAMES SPANN, 33/40’s chief meteorologist, brings his traveling “All-You-Need-To-Know-About-The-Weather” show to Ohatchee High School on Tuesday, Feb. 26.

I attended one of Spann’s deals several years ago and it’s well worth your time. It’s free, too.

The show starts at 6:30 p.m., and you might like to show up a bit early. The popular Spann usually plays to a full house.

* * * TOP TEEN will be back next week. There was a “slip-up” this week when the promised “Top Teen” information from the school failed to show up.
