“I told the girls to just come out and play 32 minutes,” Madison County coach Anthony Montague said. “We won it on the defensive end. The offensive set wasn’t working right, but we played great defense.”
The Lady Tigers broke the game open in the third quarter, extending its lead to as many as 13 points behind the strong shooting of Nichols. Despite making several small runs as the clock ticked down, Cherokee County, which was led by Tori Davis’ 19 points and 17 rebounds, was never able to overcome the deficit.
Madison County advances to the state semifinals Thursday for the first time since 2005. The Lady Tigers will play Clarke County (27-4), the South Regional champion.
