Re “Senator Gerald Dial supporting specialized medicine for premature infants” (News article, Jan. 24):

It seems Richard Laird and Gerald Dial have a wish to make this their last term in office in the state Legislature.

After their outlandish behavior last year in wanting a slush fund taken from the tobacco tax of our county, both have continued to do things that are just as foolish, the latest being Laird forwarding a racial email cartoon of President Obama and Rep. Nancy Pelosi just after he left the Democratic Party. I believe the Democratic Party probably cheered when Laird announced his decision to be an Independent representative. I know I did.

Dial, on the other hand, filed a bill that would benefit some of his supporters in the pharmaceutical business. He, of course, doesn’t remember receiving the donations, but the Alabama Secretary of State’s office does. Now, just by chance, Dial is pushing for the state Medicaid agency to supply a $1,200-per-dose pill to try to avert some of the premature births. Dr. Jeff Collins of Anniston told The Star there are many reasons Alabama has such a high rate of premature births, including smoking while pregnant, obesity, improper prenatal care and teenage pregnancies.

It is my feeling that politicians should not dabble in medicine and other things beyond their expertise, but stick to what they do best, whatever that may be. No one should publicly support anyone who would participate in this sort of thing, and I hope the people of this district have the good sense to vote these two out of office in 2014 and grant their wish. Both of these men have been in office too long and seem to have lost their vision and purpose in representing their constituents.
