Alabama athletics director Bill Battle told a Birmingham radio show this week his predecessor, Mal Moore, will need a lung transplant.

“He has a lung condition and is in need of a lung transplant," Battle told WJOX-FM's morning show, called “Opening Drive.”

“As I understand it, he has got to build his body up to be stronger than what it was at least a week ago to be able to handle the stress that comes with a transplant."

Moore entered Duke Medical Center in Durham, N.C., two weeks ago because of pulmonary issues.

Moore stepped down as athletics director March 20 after 14 years in the position. He was replaced by Battle, a former Alabama football player in the 1960s under Bear Bryant.

“He's got the spirit that will prevail,” Battle said of Moore.
