Members of the Republican Party, who controls every branch of Alabama state government, routinely denounce the president of the United States as a socialist dictator with sinister motives of “redistribution.”

Yet the newly passed Alabama Accountability Act calls for state-collected taxes to be distributed to parents of school-age children in the form of tax credits, or cash disbursements if they owe no state taxes, to refund some of the costs of their child’s transition to a “non-failing” public or non-public school of their choice. The family can qualify for these funds whether or not their child ever attended the public school deemed to be failing.

Hot on the heels of this legislation, we now have Calhoun and Talladega county officials proposing to place armed police officers in public schools. They have chosen to pay for these officers by increasing property taxes on me and other homeowners like me, whether or not we have children in Alabama schools.

It is past time that people stop accusing the boogieman in the White House of redistribution and take a look closer to home. You’ll find it commonplace here, with local and state governments routinely taking money from some Alabamians and redistributing it for the benefit of others, all while barking accusations of the same at Washington.

I guess Mama was right. The guilty dogs really do bark the loudest.
