Calhoun County softball: White Plains lands top seed for tourney

White Plains was selected as the top seed for next week’s Calhoun County softball tournament at a coaches' meeting Wednesday. The Class 3A No. 6 Wildcats won the tournament last year for the first time in school history.

The tournament will be Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

White Plains, second-seeded Saks and Pleasant Valley have byes in the first round. Oxford received the fourth seed, followed by fifth-seeded Jacksonville, No. 6 Piedmont, No. 7 Wellborn, No. 8 Ohatchee, No. 9 Alexandria, No. 10 Weaver, No. 11 Faith Christian, No. 12 Jacksonville Christian and No. 13 Anniston.

Play starts on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Oxford Lake with Jacksonville vs. JCA, Piedmont vs. Faith Christian, Wellborn vs. Weaver and Anniston vs. Oxford. Ohatchee and Alexandria play at 5 p.m.

The second round will begin at 5 p.m. on Tuesday for the winners of Piedmont/Faith, which will play Pleasant Valley, and Wellborn/Weaver, which will play Saks. The other games will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The double-elimination tournament will continue on Thursday with winner bracket games scheduled for 4 p.m. and loser bracket games starting at 5:30. The championship game scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday.

Saks enters the tournament ranked No. 10 in Class 3A, while Pleasant Valley is No. 4 in 2A.
