The Cleburne County Board of Education approved some staffing changes including layoffs of current employees on Monday.

The board members approved a list of non-tenured and support personnel for the layoffs. Some were part of a restructuring of the special education department, Superintendent Claire Dryden confirmed after the meeting.

She declined to give the names of the employees until after they had received notice, which she said wouldn’t happen until later this month.

Tammy Burkhart, director of special education for the school system since July, addressed the board during the meeting giving her reasoning for the restructuring of the department.

“I inherited some personnel and budget issues,” Burkhart said. “It’s taken a year to see the bigger picture and I need to restructure the staff accordingly.”

Burkhart requested some transfers and some moving around of jobs that she believes will improve student education.

She recommended the dismissal of several contract workers whose salaries this school year total an estimated $94,165. Those jobs can be taken over by other staff, Burkhart said. She said one teacher in a Ranburne classroom has seven students with one teacher’s assistant; another teacher has 27 students with one assistant.

“That doesn’t make sense,” Burkhart said.

She suggested combining the two classes.

The board unanimously approved three transfers of special education employees – teacher Amy Ward from Cleburne County High School to Cleburne County Middle School; Debbie Holt, an instructional aide, from Cleburne County Elementary to Cleburne County High; and Rebeeca McNeese, an instructional aide, from Cleburne County High to Cleburne County Elementary. The members also unanimously approved the layoffs.
