One of the victims in two separate shootings in Randolph County on Sunday night was talking this morning and her condition appeared to be improving, police said. Meanwhile, the teenager suspected of shooting her and killing two other people was preparing for a court appearance.

Roanoke police Chief Adam Melton said Mary Jones, a cashier at the 431 Fuel Connection gas station in Roanoke, was “in as good a condition you could hope for considering the circumstances,” this morning. Jones and her husband, Richard, both were shot multiple times with a handgun Sunday at the store. They were airlifted to Columbus Medical Center in Georgia; Richard Jones died on the way. Mary Jones was taken later to UAB Hospital in Birmingham in critical condition.

Melton said the suspect in the shootings, 16-year-old Montoreous Kevonn Heard, was scheduled to appear in court this morning. He said authorities were seeking capital murder charges against Heard. The teen already is charged with capital murder in connection to a shooting near Wedowee on Sunday night that left his father, Alton Heard, dead.
