Weather forced the postponement of the Class 6A, Area 13 softball championship round Saturday, and when the Yellow Jackets were able to return to the field Tuesday afternoon, they dominated and won the crown.
They completed a suspended game by defeating Clay-Chalkville 9-8. Oxford trailed 8-4 in the fifth inning when rain postponed the contest.
Oxford’s win forced a winner-take-all game in the double-elimination tournament, and the Yellow Jackets won that one, too, 9-1.
Clay-Chalkville had scored a win over Oxford earlier in the tournament, which forced the Yellow Jackets to beat their Area 13 rivals twice to take the tournament.
This marks three straight area tournaments for Oxford (30-18), which advances to the North Regional tournament at Huntsville’s Sportsplex. The Yellow Jackets will open against Grissom at 5 p.m. Friday.
Oxford finished fourth in the regional last year and tied for fifth in 2011.
Both the area champion and runner-up advance, which means Clay-Chalkville will advance, too. Grissom finished as Area 14 runner-up to Albertville.
Sparkman, Buckhorn, Austin and Florence also qualified for the North Regional.
On Tuesday, Oxford rallied with in the seventh inning when the tying and winning runs scored on an error by Makenzie Trantham’s batted ball.
Jenn Turner went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs. Trantham was 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
JoJo Skinner got the pitching win, striking out four.
In the second game, Sydney Williams struck out three and shut down Clay-Chalkville to earn the win.
At the plate, she was 1-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBIs. Turner was 4-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Trantham was 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Stewart Gail Chase was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
