If you're a Gene Kelly impersonator, you might want to take out your bright yellow slicker and rain boots this weekend. The Anniston area is in line for a potential soaking along with some severe weather, which could include straight-line winds and hail.

The 70 percent chance of rain set to hit the city in the early morning hours this Saturday may trump last weekend's rainfall measurements of 2.35 inches.

"We are definitely trending higher than normal from last year to this year," National Weather Service meteorologist Jessica Talley said.

For Anniston, the normal average rainfall from Jan. 1 through May 7 is 19.68 inches. Anniston has received 28.20 inches already this year, according to the National Weather Service office in Calera.

According to Talley, the chilly spring weather is the result of a strong air mass coming down from Canada. Instead of warm Gulf currents, Anniston has been receiving arctic blasts.

“We see it a lot in the wintertime. I can say that in May we very rarely get that setup,” she said, adding that the normal springtime weather should be arriving soon, ideally by the middle of next week.

“Usually you might have a week or two where you get the same type of weather. Over time you have something that comes along that breaks it up and leads us into our normal weather,” she said.

The rest of the weekly forecast includes mainly sunny skies through Friday with a high of 79 and a low of 61, partly cloudy to mostly cloudy Friday evening, rain and severe weather advisory on Saturday with a high of 75 and a low of 56, and clearing skies on Sunday with a high of 74.
