There may be more delays on Interstate 20 as the Alabama Department of Transportation is moving further into Cleburne County with its plans to widen the federal highway.

In preparation, the outside lanes of I-20 from Alabama 46 at exit 205 to west of the Tallapoosa River right around mile marker 209 will be closed so that workers can shore up the lane and the shoulder to accept traffic, said DeJarvis Leonard, division engineer for ALDOT.

The outside lanes of east and west traffic will be closed beginning at 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. each day through May 20, weather permitting, according to a news release from the department.

“Motorists can expect delays during the lane shifts,” the news release states.

The department suggests using alternate routes or adjusting arrival and departure times during the scheduled construction.

Once the lanes are repaired and shored up, the traffic will be routed onto the outside lane and shoulder so workers can get started on widening the road, Leonard said. It will go through the same process as the first phase of work on the area currently under construction, he said.

In addition, according to the news release, westbound traffic from mile marker 210 may also be reduced to one lane intermittently over the next few weeks.

Georgia-based contractor C.W. Matthews will be handling the project, Leonard added.
