The appeal of high school sports was omnipresent in all four softball regionals this weekend, but I saw it in one dramatic moment at the North Central Regional on Saturday.

Cherokee County and Sardis were scoreless in the bottom of the seventh inning of the Class 4A winners’ bracket final. The winner goes to the state tournament, and catcher Madison Millsaps was batting with the winning run on third base.

A few feet from Millsaps, behind the backstop, was her mom, who keeps stats for the team. Right next to mom was big sis Lauren Millsaps, the Warriors' former star pitcher who went on to wind and whip for Shorter University.

“Madi,”as mom and sis call her, pulled a ball just past the left-fielder’s best attempt to field it, getting a game-winning double.

Cherokee County won its fourth regional title in a row. The state runner-up the past two years will go for the winners' trophy next week.

Lauren, part of the program's great recent history, walked over behind the dugout and gave sis a pat on the back.
