The weather service’s warning statement declared a flash flood emergency for Oxford, Anniston and Talladega. Streams had risen from their banks and were making roads impassable, the statement said.
The statement said “flash flooding was occurring across the warned area and swift water rescues were ongoing” at 5:57 a.m.
According to weather service data online, 3.67 inches of rain had fallen at the Anniston Regional Airport since about 8 p.m. Thursday. An additional 1 to 2 inches of rainfall is possible this morning, the weather service’s warning statement said.
The statement called the situation “dangerous” and “life-threatening” and urged residents to take precautions to “avoid loss of life and property.”
