Good Gracious

I love the fact that I can recognize individuals for various reasons through my column. That is a special part of my job. However, I do need some help from my readers (all eleven of you) to keep me updated on situations. If any of you spot a change that I need to make, please notify me at rkpsop816@yahoo.com or at PO Box 924.

CCHS 1963

If you remember the songs “Sugar Shack” and “Wipe Out” with fondness…you may have been in high school in the glorious 1960s. If you are a member of the Cleburne County High School class of 1963, you are in for a real treat. This class will be “reuniting” in a big way. Their event is being planned for June 8 at 6:00 at the Wesley Center behind the First United Methodist Church of Heflin. Those on the planning committee need to have reservations by June 1. Cost is $25.00 a person. For more information about reserving your place, call Leon Nelson (253-2625), Gail or Harold Barker (253-2468) or Gary Wright (463-2188). You don’t want to miss this!

Second Verse

My very first friend was Martha Ann Smith. This friendship bloomed when we were mere children many years ago. Let me just say that T.V. screens were in black and white (if you even owned one), our phone numbers contained two numerals and we hung clothes on a line to dry. She is now Martha Brown and she is still my friend! We can go months without seeing or talking to one another and pick up right where we left off the next time we meet.

After she read my column of last week in which I recounted my canoe trip down the Tallapoosa River and thanking Mark Laminack for his guidance, she had a postscript to add.

Martha recalls another “white knuckle moment” in my life.

This was when we were adults and had children in the same program in the Cleburne County school system. The teacher for this program (Carol Sarrell) had planned a trip to Mobile to visit the USS Alabama. Martha and I were among the chaperones. We were to depart from the Birmingham airport amid storms and lightning in the area. I had only flown one time in my life before that day and I was not the picture of calmness and confidence! The following are Martha’s words…not mine:

“We were all buckled in our seats and listened to the flight attendant’s mandatory safety information. The plane backs away from the terminal, drives a short distance and stops for the pilot to wait for the okay to take off.

Suzanne turns to me and said, “Well, that take-off wasn’t so bad.” It was not until I stopped laughing that I could tell her that we had not taken off and we were still on the (runway) ground. After we were airborne, she relaxed and we all enjoyed the flight as well as an enjoyable day in Mobile. How similar this trip was to her rafting trip!”

I want to thank Martha for her friendship and her humorous recollection!

Bye!

Until next week…remember…Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.
