I agree with Nick Saban and his reasons for advocating a nine-game SEC football schedule but take it a step deeper than his concern for fans.

At a time when hundreds of ESPN employees lost their jobs partly because of rights fees that network pays, I just want to see someone in major college football do something for reasons beyond money and positioning for postseason play.

Let’s keep rivalries alive because, well, let’s keep rivalries alive.

Let’s give up a home game every other year just for the sake of keeping rivalries alive and being seen at other SEC locales.

Let’s let a conference still feel something like a conference and not just a timeshare for a confederation of money grubbers.

Rivalries and the conference feel are still important in college sports. Don’t believe so? Then let them go away for the pursuit of money and see what happens.

Maybe, like Saban says, fans will start staying home, and the money won’t be so good. God forbid.
