HOT BLAST: Off the sofa and on our feet

First the bad news from this morning's Anniston Star: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention "statistics show that just 15 percent of Alabama adults in 2011 met national physical activity guidelines, the fourth-lowest rate in the country — numbers directly tied to the state's high levels of obesity and diabetes, experts say."

The good news is that our community is making steady progress on offering venues that help residents to get moving. There's hope for an extension of the Ladiga Trail south into downtown Anniston, which will benefit walkers/runners/cyclists.

Then there are the mountain biking trails on Coldwater, which offers an expanding network of routes on the Forever Wild property plus an economic boost for the region.

Looking for an excuse to increase your fitness and a goal to get you there? We'd suggest competing (running or walking) in Anniston's Woodstock 5K on Aug. 3. Check out the event's Facebook page for details on training runs, which begin in early June.
