Historic downtown Oxford is alive and well, they say, and beginning this Thursday the festival will close a portion of Choccolocco Street from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. It will run each Thursday until late August.
Charlotte Hubbard, one of the event organizers and the owner of Hubbard House Antiques in downtown Oxford, said the event is being called “Downtown After Sundown” and was started as a way to bring fresh vegetables to the area.
The event grew into something larger, Hubbard said, and now has numerous vendors signed up to attend opening day.
There will be flowers from Rainbow Omega, live music, and art for sale from local artists.
Hubbard said she is working to secure more vendors as well, and downtown shops will display merchandise outside during the festival.
Stevie McCord, another of the organizers, said that while there will be fresh vegetables, the event will be more of a hybrid than a standard farmers market.
Anniston musician Joseph Cramer will play instrumental guitar music Thursday, and McCord said organizers are looking for other local musicians and entertainers for future festivals.
“It’s going to be more of a showcase and a family-friendly environment,” McCord said. “We’re going to be showcasing local arts and musicians. Pretty much anybody that’s willing to come out and show us what they do.”
Choccolocco Street will be blocked from the performing arts center to the intersection with Main Street.
