To those invested in the notion that SEC wins national championships by shrugging off the classroom, there’s bad news.

That Alabama football team, which has won three of the past four national titles? It just won the NCAA Division I Public Recognition Award for the team's latest multi-year NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate.

Football was one of five Alabama teams to receive the recognition, second only to six from Vanderbilt, another SEC school. Alabama’s men’s golf team, which just won its national championship, got the APR award for the third year in a row.

It says a lot of things.

One, there’s yet another indicator pointing in the right direction in Nick Saban’s six-plus-year run as Alabama’s football coach. Yes, Saban has the luxury of being choosey in recruiting, but then top recruits want to play for him.

Two, Saban’s preaching about doing things right extends beyond the practice field and weight room.

Lastly, in this time of mouthy luminaries from other conferences, it means that Vandy isn’t the only SEC school doing it right.
