Re “Support community recycling” (Speak Out, May 31):

Like Bryan Cuneo of Anniston, I also called Quintard Mall to inquire about the absence of the recycling containers that are provided by the county extension service. I was told, as was Mr. Cuneo, that space was needed for the relocation of the Firestone sign because the new CVS Pharmacy sign would be occupying the previous Firestone site.

However, after politely inquiring further, I was also told that the area where the bins were located had become a dumping ground for mattresses, car parts and other items that should have gone to the county landfill. I was told that considerable manpower and energy had been expended by Quintard Mall in maintaining the appearance of the recycling area because people abused it. This is not a surprise to me. Almost every time I dropped off my recyclable items, the area was a mass of trash because people did not obey the guidelines that were plainly printed on the metal containers.

Quintard Mall was doing its part to be a good steward of the community by making space available to those who want to recycle properly. It is not its fault that this service is no longer offered. It is the fault of those who are apathetic and lethargic, who don’t play by the rules, who have no concern that landfills will get full and that there are smarter ways to dispose of the waste we create. These people have brought to a screeching halt a very viable and needed program, and successfully thrown our area back into the ’70s.
