HOOVER — After a long day of golf, Anniston’s Matt Rogers stands 64th after three rounds of the 97th Alabama State Amateur.

Rogers, the only Calhoun County player in the field, shot a third-round 86 Saturday after completing his final nine holes in a suspended second round earlier in the day to make the cut.

He stands at 237 for 54 holes.

Robbie Shelton of Wilmer, the top-ranked junior in the country and an Alabama signee, holds a two-shot lead over Michael Johnson of Birmingham entering today’s final round.

Aces in the crowd: Steve Akers has been playing golf for 50 years and Saturday he finally got to experience a golfer’s thrill of a lifetime.

The Oxford resident scored his first hole-in-one, acing the 103-yard No. 13 at Highland Park Golf Course in Birmingham. The retired railroad worker, a course marshall at Cider Ridge, used a gap wedge. It helped him shoot 75, 32 on the back nine.

The shot was witnessed by Andrew Brooks.
