American Legion Post 98 in Piedmont will observe the 63rd National Flag Day with a ceremonial flag burning at 8 o’clock tonight at Veterans Memorial Park in Piedmont.

“The flags for the ceremony have been turned into the flag drop box we have,” Legion member Gene Bradford said. “And we’ve been collecting them for over a year.”

Flag burnings for the national observance are done to honor the retiring of tattered, faded and damaged flags.

“When you burn [the flags] like that, it’s the proper way to get rid of them,” Ray Johnson, junior vice commander of Anniston’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 924, said. “Instead of people just throwing them away or on the ground, stomping or spitting on them.”
