A grant is helping Hobson City Public Library put more books into the hands of kids this summer, and just in time as the library’s seasonal reading program gets under way.

A large portion of the $2,000 grant, awarded by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, was used to buy activity workbooks for kids in grades K-7, said library director Donna Ross.

Kids in the summer reading program, called “Go Undercover — READ!,” will use those workbooks throughout the summer, Ross said.

About 45 kids have signed up to take part in the summer reading program, but Ross hopes to hit her target of about 100 kids before summer’s end. Last year, 75 kids took part in the program.

“They read at their own pace and make a commitment to read a certain amount,” Ross said, explaining how important reading over the summer is in retaining knowledge learned during the school year.

In order to get a free reading program T-shirt, kids must meet their reading goals and complete workbook activities, Ross said.

“Sometimes a small prize or an incentive of some sort ... and they’ll just keep reading. They’ll go way beyond what you anticipated,” Ross said.

The retail chain’s literacy foundation has awarded more than $81 million in grants to nonprofits since it was founded in 1993, according to the company’s website. The foundation awarded $6 million this year to more than 725 schools, nonprofits and literacy organizations.

After being closed for around a decade due to a lack of funds, the town reopened the library in 2010, thanks largely to a $25,000 grant from the Alabama Civil Justice Foundation.

The library hosts themed family nights each Monday at 5:30 p.m., and each Wednesday weekly activities and art lessons are held. On Thursdays at 2 p.m. the library provides story time and crafts for preschool-aged children. For more information, log on to
