Striplin — chair of the town’s police and public safety committee — said deputies from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department have stepped up patrols, which is helping return a sense of safety among the residents.
“On your way in here today I’m sure you’ve noticed,” Striplin told the council. “The police presence on MLK has really picked up.”
A June 9 shooting left two bullet holes in the window of a Hobson City woman’s car. The woman and her 5-year-old child, in the car at the time, were unharmed. The Sheriff’s Department is asking for help identifying those involved.
Deputies are also investigating another shooting that took place June 4 when a 28-year-old woman reported to police that she found bullet holes in her SUV, which was parked on Martin Luther King Drive.
Meanwhile, in an effort to bring in some much-needed cash to the town, letters to Hobson City residents who have outstanding bills toward their town-supplied garbage collection service will be mailed out July 1.
“The list has been reviewed by the mayor,” said Town Clerk Sheila Jones at the council meeting. Mayor Alberta McCrory wasn’t at the meeting.
Residents who receive a letter are asked to contact Town Hall to make arrangements to pay their debts, Jones said. The outstanding debt to the town is a very real problem, Jones explained.
“We have too many arrears,” Jones said. “We have a little over $24,000.”
The town’s garbage services serves about 178 customers, and some of the debts go back many years, McCrory has said.
In another matter, council members were given copies of a manual containing updated personnel policies and procedures for town employees. The council may vote at its next meeting to approve the changes, which include more detailed job descriptions and responsibilities for those employees.
The next council meeting is scheduled for July 8 at 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall.
