In just their first meet of the season, the Jacksonville Hurricane Swim Team came away with a second place finish in the four-team event.

Oneonta took first place with 760 points followed by Jacksonville with 456.5, Anniston with 337.5 and Centre took fourth place with 236 points.

Jacksonville Head Swim Coach Justin Buckles was pleased with his team’s performance. The Hurricanes faced some tough competition from Oneonta who came into the meet with five meets under their belts. The Oneonta team also swims year round while Jacksonville has been practicing for only two and a half weeks.

The Hurricanes have 34 swimmers ranging in age from 7-17 years old.

Two of Jacksonville’s swimmers, Dawson Hathaway, 12, and Kyle Seeger, 13, swam in the 15-18 year age group.

“I was pleased with all the individuals as a whole,” said Buckles. “I was real happy.”

Buckles, a student at JSU and a lifeguard at the community center, practices his swim team Monday-Friday, one hour a day for the different age groups. He also holds extra practice in the afternoon for those who want to have an extra workout session.

“I have 10 or so that I feel could really push it and possibly someday go to college and swim,” said Buckles.

The Hurricanes have four scheduled meets to included district and state. The district meet will be held in Centre on July 13 with the state meet being held in Cullman July 25-27.
