On this date in 1957, the International Geophysical Year began. As the Eisenhower presidential library notes, it was an "international cooperative scientific program was conducted to study the earth and its environment."

The effort, which President Eisenhower called a "demonstration of the ability of peoples of all nations to work together harmoniously for the common good," ended in 1958.

Music fans may remember as the inspiration for this 1982 Donald Fagen song.
