The City of Heflin will start its Independence Day celebration on July 4th with a Salute to America parade at 9:30 a.m. Heflin police officer Jackie Stovall is scheduled to be the grand marshal of the parade down Ross Street. The parade will feature non-motorized vehicles such as bicycles, wagons, and horses decorated for the day. There will be prizes for the best decorated bike, wagon and horse.

The rest of the day’s festivities will take place at the City Park beginning at 5 p.m. There will be a Duck Derby, water-slides, sand castle building, bingo and food. The Cleburne County Democrats will sponsor a watermelon seed spiting contest, said City Clerk Shane Smith. At 7 p.m., Tennessee-based bluegrass band Flatt Lonesome will take the stage. Then at 9 p.m. the city will hold its annual fireworks show at the Heflin City Football field.
