Local Independence Day celebrations may be dashed by downpours.

According to a National Weather Service forecast, there is a 100 percent chance of rain in the area today, a 90 percent chance of rain tomorrow and the area will remain under a flash flood watch until Saturday. The chance for rain also remains high throughout the weekend and the weather could interrupt plans for public celebrations, but officials in Jacksonville and Oxford aren't yet ready to cancel planned firework shows.

Jacksonville still plans to host its Independance Day celebration this evening. The city’s Parks and Recreation Department spent this morning setting up for the event, scheduled to be held at the Jacksonville High School football stadium.

If rain causes Jacksonville to cancel tonight’s planned celebration, the celebration will happen Saturday, according to Helen Altman, the office manager at the Parks and Recreation Department.

“We will not do it in a downpour, but unless it’s thundering and lightning, it’s still a go,” Altman said.

Jacksonville’s celebration is set to begin at 6 p.m. with games for children. A community band and choir are scheduled to perform patriotic music at 8 p.m. and a fireworks display is planned for 9 p.m.

In Oxford, officials are hoping the rain will hold off.

“We’re optimistic about it,” said Don Hudson, director of Oxford’s Parks and Recreation Department. “We’ll just have to see what the weather does.”

Oxford plans to host an all-day celebration Thursday, set to begin at 8 a.m. and lasting through a 9 p.m. fireworks display at Oxford Lake. If the event is called off because of rain Thursday the city plans to host the event Friday. If rain halts festivities Friday the celebration will be held Saturday, Hudson said.
