Anniston police on Monday charged an inmate at the Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women with stealing from a local fast-food restaurant last year, when she was employed there as a manager.

Leah Suzanne Smith, 37, of Talladega, was charged with second-degree theft, a felony, according to a police report.

Anniston police Capt. Allen George said Smith stole $843 from Wendy’s at 1501 Quintard Ave. between Aug. 27, 2012 and Sept. 13, 2012. George said a police report was filed by employees of the fast-food restaurant in October.

A warrant for Smith’s arrest was signed in October, George said, and held while she served a sentence for a previous theft. The captain said the previous charge involved money stolen from a Wendy’s in Talladega. George was uncertain how much cash was stolen in Talladega, but said the restaurant was having “register issues” until Smith left.

Online court records show Smith was sentenced to six months in prison on first-degree theft charges and is scheduled to be released on Sept. 14. George said upon Smith’s release, deputies from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office will take her to the Calhoun County Jail.

Smith’s bond is set at $2,500. A court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 5.
