I’ve spent numerous hours at batting practices and sitting at games where I thought I’d definitely get a foul ball. The end result was always the same thing — no ball. Yet, on July 4 while I was at a minor league game, I was nearly hit by a hard foul while walking around the stadium.
When I realized what had happened, I became the only person chasing the ball. I ran through numerous bushes for nearly a minute before a kid picked up the ball and celebrated.
More than anything, I felt ashamed.
There are certain dreams you give up on in life. One is getting a foul ball at a game. More importantly, that also means stop taking a glove to a game if you’re more than 12 years old.
And although I always wanted a foul ball, not having one doesn’t hurt as much as the time I tried to bare-hand a home run during batting practice. That end result was the ball bouncing off my hand into the next section in the air. A grown man got the ball instead of me.
