Students attend event at University of Alabama

Local students attended the 76th American Legion Alabama Boys State held in June at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

Dylan Akin, a student at Piedmont High School, participated in the Aerospace Interest Group while at the 76th American Legion Alabama Boys State. He learned about the past and future of aerospace in the state of Alabama and the United States. He is the son of Amy Scott and Matt Akin.

Charles Sparks, a student at Piedmont High School, participated in the Aerospace Interest Group while at the 76th American Legion Alabama Boys State. He learned about the past and future of aerospace in the state of Alabama and the United States. He is the son of Janet and Randy Sparks.

Jamal Young, a student at Piedmont High School, participated in the Business Interest Group while at the 76th American Legion Alabama Boys State. He learned about business and economic development strategies for the future of Alabama. He is the son of Zinidi Spear.

Tareek Spears, a student at Piedmont High School, participated in the Engineering and Computer Interest Group while at the 76th American Legion Alabama Boys State. He learned about emerging technologies and opportunities in the engineering and computer science fields. He is the son of Terrace and Roland Ridley.

Curry Cates, a student at Oxford High School, participated in the Aerospace Interest Group while at the 76th American Legion Alabama Boys State. He learned about the past and future of aerospace in the state of Alabama and the United States. He is the son of Leslie and Gerald Cates.

Michael Cole, a student at Ohatchee High School, participated in the Business Interest Group while at the 76th American Legion Alabama Boys State. He learned about business and economic development strategies for the future of Alabama. He is the son of Tisha Brown and Brandon Cole.

Kyle Furlow, a student at Jacksonville High School, participated in the Aerospace Interest Group while at the 76th American Legion Alabama Boys State. He learned about the past and future of aerospace in the state of Alabama and the United States. He is the son of Mary and Anthony Furlow.

Neal Van Marter III, a student at The Donoho School, participated in the House of Representatives Interest Group while at the 76th American Legion Alabama Boys State. He was elected to the House of Representatives, where he wrote and debated bills of importance to all Alabama citizens. He is the son of Rebecca and Neal Van Marter.

Houston West, a student at Alexandria High School, participated in the Law Enforcement Interest Group while at the 76th American Legion Alabama Boys State. He learned about the different roles of law enforcement. He is the son of Dana and Marc West.
