Anniston Mayor Vaughn Stewart, hospitalized over the weekend for an appendectomy, expects to be back in the swing of things by the end of the week.

In a telephone interview from Regional Medical Center Monday morning, Stewart said he expected to be released after lunch.

“I feel good,” he said.

Stewart said he began having abdominal pains Friday afternoon. He went to the emergency room on Saturday, where staff confirmed his appendix was the cause. By 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, he was in surgery.

“Everybody was very nice,” he said of the hospital staff. “I’m glad I caught it at the early stages...It just gets worse.”

Stewart said he rearranged the many meetings he had scheduled for Monday and Tuesday and hopes to ease back into his routine beginning Wednesday and be back at full strength by Thursday or Friday.

“Everybody says that even though it was just an appendix, don’t overdo it,” he said
