Police were investigating today a stolen check cashed at a local bank earlier this month.

Anniston police Capt. Allen George said a check for $300 was cashed at Regions Bank on the 900 block of Wilmer Avenue on July 3. George said the same suspect attempted to cash a second check written from the same account on July 9 and a bank teller became suspicious. The teller contacted the account holder, George said, and discovered the victim had not written any checks to the suspect. The teller called police, but the suspect fled before police arrived.

George was uncertain how much money the second check was written for. Police identified the suspect through video surveillance footage, George said.

Any suspect could be charged with felony second-degree possession of a forged instrument.
