As Tuesday’s Star pointed out, an ever-increasing number of public school students in Calhoun County will be relying on computer technology when the new year starts next month.

Laptops and tablets are rapidly lessening the importance of what were once the standard tools for grade-school learning — pencils, paper, hardcover books.

If used properly this development could vastly improve both teaching and learning. However, it also signals the end of the age-old excuse that the dog ate the student’s homework. Claiming a computer hacker is to blame just doesn’t have the same ring to it.
