TUSCALOOSA -- After the veterans set the stage Friday morning, Alabama’s newcomers hit the field for the first time in preseason practice in the evening.

“The purpose for this is that it gives us an opportunity because if you get out there with the whole team, the young guys are always in the back of the line,” Saban said. “They're the last guys to get in. … We use this split format to be able to really focus on trying to teach them the drills, the fundamentals, the flexibility program.”

Here are a few takeaways:

--Alabama had nine offensive lineman. They were repeatedly told to "blow people off the ball."

--True freshmen Cooper Bateman, Luke Del Rio and Parker McLeod were the quarterbacks on hand.

--Robert Foster, the last 2013 recruit to be cleared, looked crisp while running routes. Foster will wear No. 8, following in the footsteps of former Tide star Julio Jones.

--Reuben Foster and other middle linebackers ran drills with defensive coordinator Kirby Smart. If Foster takes in everything Smart tells him, he could be the next great Alabama middle linebacker.

--The defensive lineman are all massive, overgrown 18-year-olds. Just imagine what they will look like in two or three years once they get on a college training regime. They were repeatedly coached on hand placement and eye level.

Day two of preseason practice is scheduled for Saturday at 2:30 with Fan Day scheduled for Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
