WEDNESDAY’S LIST . . . of beans ‘n greens ‘n other things:

***

YOU CAN’T mention Saks without the Vaughn family in the conversation.

The latest on the way to contributing to a community her family had a major hand in developing is Crystal Sparks, the new principal at Saks Elementary School.

Crystal is the great-granddaughter of Boyd and Elon Vaughan and if you’re wondering why the “a” in that spelling is Boyd put it there “because it made me the first Vaugh(a)n in the phone book.”

Saks would have become a high school without Boyd, but he was the guiding force and the gym  is named for him. And sometimes I think half of Saks lives on land developed by Boyd.

We do and became quite close over the years.

Crystal is the daughter of Billy Turner and Cathy Vaughn Thacker.

This could go on at length, but I’ll wrap it up by saying Crystal is a Saks High and Jax State grad and, along the way, has taught in the Oxford school system and at Weaver and Alexandria.

In her other life, husband is Sgt. Chris Sparks (Anniston Police Department) and she has three sons to keep up with, Hunter, Hudson, and Hollis.

So . . . welcome “home” Crystal Sparks.

ASHLEY SMITH LANE, a graduate of UAB Medical School,  is currently doing her residency in Huntsville. Good credentials, of course, but it is also a good bet Dr. Lane won’t have any trouble finding a place to practice.

Like back home in Lineville at the Lineville Medical Clinic where her dad George Smith Jr. holds fort. Her grandfather,  George Smith Sr., was a founder.

That makes Ashley a third-generation doctor and I’ll bet you it also makes George Sr. a really proud grandfather.

No kin, but he happens to be a long-time friend and one of the really good guys ever

YOU’VE GOT to love this:

“Alabama beat Arkansas and Arkansas fired its coach.

“Alabama beat Tennessee and Tennessee fired its coach.

“Alabama beat Notre Dame and the Pope resigned.

 “Man, I wish the White House had a team . . .”

That one came by e-mail.

BIRTHDAYS: Aug. 11 – James Lane and Kay Price; Aug. 13 – Mary Albright; Aug. 14 – Jerre McKleroy, Harold Woodard and Carolyn Green; Aug. 15 – Lucile Grant.

Aug. 16 – Mark Gaddy, Rev. C. O. Grinstead, Don Golden and Don Williams; Aug. 17 – Catherine Bishop.

Then there is Joyce Bynum and her kin: Carrie McDowell (niece), Drerk Bynum (son), Cecil Hawkins (nephew) and Trendon Howard (grandson). The deal there is all four celebrate their birthdays on Aug. 10.

I hope they had a big party . . .

A REPLAY from an editorial in our newspaper a few days back:

“(b.) renovates a block that, truth be told, is as ugly as an Edsel.”

For you who came in late the Edsel was an automobile put out by Ford Motor that was on the market just three years, 1958-59-60. It was a laughing stock.

I was not one who laughed. Fact is, I thought the Edsel was a really good-looking car.

‘Course along the way I’ve owned a Simca (French) and an American Motors Pacer  . . .

Have a good day.
