JACKSONVILLE — Jacksonville State put out its first depth chart of preseason camp Friday, and it shed little light on the starting quarterback for the opener at Alabama State.

The chart lists Minnesota transfer Max Shortell first, but places “or” with Eli Jenkins and then Kyle West. Shortell is the only one who has thrown a pass in a college game.

There are numerous of first-year Gamecocks on the list.

First-year players Josh Barge and Markis Merrill are listed No. 1 at the wide receiver spots. Barges, listed ahead of Cherokee County’s Gabe Chambers, didn’t play last season while recovering from an injury suffered in his high school track season.

Division I transfers Caleb Gulledge (Alabama) and Michael Flint (Arkansas State) are listed No. 2 on the left side of the offensive line. Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference lineman Tarik Milner also is listed No. 2.

Center Casey Dunn of Hewitt-Trussville and receiver Anthony Johnson of Maplesville are the only true freshmen listed on the two-deep.

Defensively, Division I transfers Chris Landrum (Auburn) and Kameron Wood (Ole Miss) are 1-2 at defensive end. Appalachian State transfer Jamill Lott is listed as a No. 2 cornerback.

“These are guys that have worked hard,” JSU coach Bill Clark said in a statement. “They’ve worked hard to get into that two-deep. … I feel like we’ve got three guys at a lot of spots that can play. Hats off to the guys that got to be in that two-deep.”
