For the first time, Alabama has the opportunity to provide 300,000 of its residents with affordable health care. These are hardworking people who are caught in the middle. Since one or more family members work, they are not eligible for Medicaid, and they do not earn enough to pay the high cost of health insurance. They are truly one serious illness in the family away from disaster.

A recent Gallup Poll found Alabama to be the second most religious state in the nation, and it is well known that the overwhelming majority of Alabamians are of the Christian faith. This includes Gov. Robert Bentley, who is an active member of the First Baptist Church Tuscaloosa where he serves as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He has been chairman of the Board of Deacons four times and a member of the Youth for Christ Advisory Board. Bentley has been a dedicated Christian for his entire life, and the decision on the expansion of Medicaid coverage for the working poor is up to him.

Perhaps it is appropriate to ask, “What would Jesus do?” The answer for many of us is found in Matthew 25:40-45, which is partially quoted as follows: … “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

Let us all pray that Bentley accepts the expansion of Medicaid that will cover our brothers and sisters who are in desperate need.
