David Clark, head coach of Jacksonville, was impressed with his opponents’ play.
“We were put in some very competitive situations. It’s good to be pushed early in the year,” he said. “I thought Saks and Oxford did a very good job. We were fortunate to get out of here with two wins.”
The Golden Eagles were led by Courtney Bowden with 26 assists, Katie Neisler with 28 kills and Ariel Diaz with 11 digs.
Jacksonville improved its record to 6-2 and will return to action Sept. 12 against Boaz at Oneonta.
In another match, Oxford edged Saks 25-23, 25-17.
The homestanding Wildcats were led by Jaelyn Wilson with 27 assists, Jordan Briskey with 18 kills and Tiffany Springer with 27 digs.
Saks head coach Randy Law was pleased with the play of his girls.
“We were a little bit nervous coming in, but we were excited too,” said Law. “We want to play good competition that makes us better. I think we stepped up for the most part.”
Saks improved its record to 5-2 and returns to action Thursday at home against White Plains.
The Yellow Jackets were led by Morgan Whaley with 20 assists, Lexie Higgins with nine digs and Breanna Nolan with 16 kills.
Oxford’s head coach, Wendy McKibbin said that she liked that her team’s intensity was up but would like to work on getting more kills off of serves received.
Oxford returns to action Thursday at Ohatchee.
Donoho 2, Alexandria 1; Donoho 2, Piedmont 0 – Corey Phillis had 24 kills as Donoho beat Alexandria 27-29, 25-23, 15-8 and swept host Piedmont 25-18, 25-7.
Phillis added 19 digs and 11 blocks, while Rylee Segrest had 40 assists, 13 digs and seven kills.
Kayla Wallace had five kills, four aces and 11 digs. Hannah Christian contributed eight kills and five digs.
Donoho (6-1) will play Wadley on Thursday.
Ranburne 3, Woodland 1 – Indiana Morgan put away 14 kills and had nine digs and seven blocks for Ranburne in an 11-25, 25-13, 25-21, 25-13 win over Woodland.
Riley Peterson added 12 kills, 13 digs and three blocks. Lacey Hiett contributed 22 assists. Erica Taylor had 10 digs, nine aces, five blocks and four kills.
Ranburne (1-5) has a Monday match at Randolph County.
White Plains 2, Pleasant Valley 1; White Plains 2, Victory Christian 0 – Sophie Taylor’s 12 kills, seven aces and six digs led White Plains to a 17-25, 25-23, 15-8 win over host Pleasant Valley and a 25-6, 25-17 win over Victory Christian.
Rachel Snider had 38 assists, while Lauren Mueller contributed 21, Rylee Randall had seven kills.
White Plains (3-1) will play Thursday at Saks.
Ohatchee 3, Wellborn 1 -- After dropping the first game, Ohatchee roared back for a Class 2A, Area 12 win 20-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-21.
Morgan Lee had 10 kills and eight digs for Ohatchee (3-2), while Mattie Coger had 16 assists. Joria Steger and Silver Miller had nine kills each. Kaelin Cobb and Peyton Stienburg each contributed eight digs.
