Anniston police Wednesday charged two people with capital murder in connection with the death of an 89-year-old woman.

Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown pronounced Alma Fleming dead at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at her home on the 500 block of South Stebbins Street in the Wellborn community.

Brown and Anniston police Capt. Allen George said they would not release the cause of death until investigators with the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences perform an autopsy.

George said police charged Walter Craig Pinkston, 32, of Anniston and Monica Marie Shively, 30, of Anniston in Fleming’s death. George said investigators believe the couple had been helping Fleming with chores such as yard work.

George said police picked the two up at the State Trooper post in Jacksonville. Pinkston was at the post to pay fines and reinstate his driver’s license, the captain said.
