OHATCHEE — The Ohatchee Town Council passed a budget Tuesday night that is nearly identical to last year’s.

The projected 2014 budget, which passed unanimously, estimates an income of about $1.1 million with expenditures at $987,000, for about $130,000 in surplus funds.

“That’s barring any unforeseen circumstances,” said Ohatchee Mayor Steve Baswell, noting the town has met its projected budget for the last several years.

One item not included in the budget is a new sewer system for the commercial corridor of town along Alabama 144. At the work session prior to its meeting, the council briefly discussed the cost of adding a system that could handle a flow of 5,000 or 10,000 gallons of water a day for the economic district of town. Baswell said if the council could get matching grants, he estimates the town might only need to borrow $100,000 to start the project, using around $250,000 from the town’s reserve funds.

“It might be a good first step in growth of our business area,” said Baswell, who told the council several businesses have said they’d be more interested in opening up in Ohatchee if the town had a sewer system. “It looks like this is doable without us going to a whole lot of debt.”

Although the system would be confined to a small area, which includes Town Hall, a Jack’s restaurant and Ohatchee Discount Groceries, the system could be built to accommodate further expansion into the residential areas of town.

The council on Tuesday also approved the purchase of two computers and a printer for the town library. Baswell said the library currently has six computers, with four available to the public.

“They’re in pretty bad shape, though,” Baswell said. “They keep crashing.”

The two new computers and printer, which will cost less than $2,500, will replace two of the computers available to the public.
