Second year for Front Porch Revival in Gadsden


The Front Porch Revival, a celebration of Alabama food and music, returns Saturday, Sept. 28, at Back Forty Beer Co. in Gadsden.

The first revival drew a crowd of more than 1,000 last March and event coordinators expect an even bigger crowd for this year’s event, which begins at 1 p.m.

Attendees will sample food from Alabama chefs including Wes True of TRUE in Montgomery, Brandon Burlesson of Voyagers in Perdido Beach, David Bancroft of Acre in Auburn and Graham Hage of Zazu in Auburn.

Artisanal cheese company Belle Chevre from Elkmont and Wickles Pickles of Dadeville will also be in attendance, and for those who are still hungry, a shrimp boil will begin around 6:30 p.m.

There will be live music throughout the day and plenty of local beers will be flowing.

ESPN’s Blackledge dishes on game-day eat in college towns

ESPN’s college football analyst Todd Blackledge has spent years seeking out unique eating spots while on the road for his “Taste of the Town” segments. Now he’s written a book, “Taste of the Town: A Guided Tour of College Football’s Best Places to Eat” (Center Street, $20), highlighting his favorite spots, interspersed with restaurant recipes and game-day specialties contributed by coaches and their wives.

It’s a fun book with recipes that aren’t fussy and a little football lore thrown in. Fans of both Alabama and Auburn will find a number of spots to hit after the next big game. The book highlights Nick’s in the Sticks, Rama Jama’s and The Waysider in Tuscaloosa and in Northport, Archibald’s BBQ. Featured eateries in Auburn include Byron’s Smokehouse, Creole and Seafood Shack, Fannie-George’s Kitchen and Ursula’s Catering.
