Anniston police on Wednesday arrested a man after his girlfriend told police he punched and choked her.

Johnny Doyle Haynes, 44, of Anniston was charged with Thursday with third-degree domestic violence, a misdemeanor, and domestic violence by strangulation, a felony.

Anniston police Sgt. Chris Sparks said officers were called to a house on the 1300 block of Leyden Street around 3:20 p.m. Wednesday.

Sparks said the female victim told officers her boyfriend, Haynes, had punched her in the face and head. Sparks said that as the argument escalated, the woman told officers, her boyfriend “placed his hands around her neck and choked her.”

The victim received scrapes and bruises, Sparks said, and was treated and released Wednesday from Regional Medical Center.

Haynes was being held at the Anniston City Jail on Thursday afternoon. Calhoun County District Court Judge Chris McIntyre set bond for Haynes at $15,000. Haynes is set to appear in court Nov. 7.
