The Opelika-Auburn News reported Saturday that Lee County Circuit Judge Jacob Walker III ordered Harvey Updyke Jr. to pay $796,731.98. Walker issued the order late Friday afternoon.
The money is to cover the lost revenue and expenses involved in removing and replacing the two trees and poisoned soil. The trees were removed April 23.
The judge wrote that Updyke could afford the $500 monthly payments and they "will not be overly burdensome on the victim or the defendant."
Updyke's attorney, Andrew Stanley, said at a September restitution hearing that his client is indigent, jobless and had only $630 to his name.
