Ahhhh …

Yes, that’s my sigh of relief after Winter Market. I had a great time, met some very creative people and even made a little money.

And as a reward, this past week I didn’t really do much of anything. Well, past working, raising the kids, buying shower surrounds and new kitchen cabinets, dealing with a broken-down van and the rest of regular life stuff.

You notice neither “cooking” nor “cleaning” was on that list. Instead, after eating leftovers or a fast-food meal, I’d put the kids to bed and fall asleep soon after while an episode of “Malcolm in the Middle” played out on Netflix. A couple nights off is exactly what I needed, especially since there are only five more weeks until Christmas, and it’s time to start thinking about all the Christmas presents I need to make.

Luckily, while I’ve been taking a week off, the ladies at First United Methodist Church have been busy preparing for their Holiday Bake Sale. Featuring homemade cakes, pies, casseroles, breads, jams, jellies, cheese balls, soup and more, this sale has everything you need for a delicious holiday. The sale is Wednesday, Nov. 20, beginning at 8 a.m. at the church at 1400 Noble St. in Anniston. For more information, call 256-236-5605.

And if you need some help decorating for the holidays, check out the live Christmas wreath class Dec. 1 at the Longleaf Botanical Gardens. This BYOF (Bring Your Own Foliage) class will teach participants how to design a wreath that will last all season. The class is $30 for members and $35 for non-members. If you’ve been around downtown Anniston lately, you might have seen the “white marble for sale” signs hanging around the soon-to-be-demolished Wells Fargo building. I called the number and talked to a very nice gentleman, who asked not to be named, about prices.

The marble is $3-$8 per square foot, depending on size and condition, with most sizes best suited for small tabletops or to be cut into smaller tiles (a quick search online shows me the cheapest price for marble at about $20 per square foot, plus about $70 shipping). The Wells Fargo white marble is probably from Alabama or Georgia, but definitely from Dixie, according to the folks he talked to at the quarry. It has a high quartz content, so it’s quite sparkly.

Larger pieces are available, but help from a professional is advised since the marble is extremely heavy and can break in transport.

Marble is one of the most luxurious stones to use for a countertop, but it’s fairly high maintenance, and needs constant care and oversight as it will etch overnight if something as acidic as a lemon wedge is left on it. But it’s the preferred stone of bakers because it is naturally cool, which helps when making pastries and other baked goods.
