Now, this feels like a high school football postseason should feel in The Anniston Star’s coverage area.

We’re three rounds into the playoffs, and we still have five teams -- Clay Central, Cleburne County, Munford, Piedmont and Saks. That’s restoring the order from a year ago, when Woodland was the lone area team to get this far.

This time a year ago, Calhoun County was done. That was an upset, considering Piedmont was Class 3A’s top-ranked team going into the playoffs.

This time a year ago, Clay Central was gone. That was an upset, considering the Vols were ranked fifth in 4A after their first regular season as a merged school between storied rivals Clay County and Lineville.

Losing Friday night lights so early in the fall of 2012 was a culture shock, because the area enjoyed Anniston, Clay County, Handley, Lineville and Oxford reaching the state semifinals in 2011. Handley beat Clay County in the semis and won the 3A title.

This year, the coverage area enjoyed 15 teams in the playoffs, including seven from Calhoun County. Besides the five teams still alive, Jacksonville, Oxford, Ranburne and Wellborn made the second round.

Donoho, Handley, Lincoln, Wadley, Weaver and Woodland all made the playoffs.

Good luck to all still playing for the AHSAA’s blue trophy, and thanks to all that made it for extending the thrills of fall.
