Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said the Bowl Championship Series is a “flawed system,” and it’s comments like this when major college football expands its playoff system next season.

You see, we already have a playoff system – it has two teams, as opposed to next year when it will have four.

And Meyer is bothered that his team isn’t considered one of the two most deserving teams at the moment. That could change by the time the regular season ends, but for now, Meyer’s Buckeyes are out.

It’s funny, because Meyer didn’t call it a “flawed system” when two of his one-loss teams at Florida made the championship game, winning national titles in 2006 and 2008.

Maybe that’s the time frame Meyer is discussing when he said of the BCS: “I think it was great for a while.”

The bottom line is the current system includes only two teams. If two human polls with nearly 200 voters and a set of six computer rankings don’t consider you among the top two, the system isn’t necessarily “flawed.”

Certainly, the only way to solve Meyer’s issue is to expand the playoff, which major colleges are doing next year.

And if it really is such a crime that a team like Ohio State could get left out, and if everyone really is so in love with an expanded playoff, consider this: Why have the presidents of NCAA schools ignored all that for decades?

Remember, the four-team playoff still won’t be administered by the NCAA. Instead, it will be just like it has been since the 1990s – a coalition of bowls, conferences and television have put it together.
