Speak Out: Thank you to my heroes

I was recently involved in a life-threatening automobile accident just outside of the Jacksonville city limits on Alabama 21 South. Within minutes, a caring, talented team of professional Jacksonville EMTs and firemen had arrived and sped into action.

In record time, I was cut loose from my seatbelt and the mangled wreckage of our totaled vehicle. Teamwork and quick assessment of the emergency situation saved not only my life but also my right arm, which was drug under the vehicle as we slid down the pavement and ended up upside-down in the road. As a result, the bones were compromised from just below my elbow and the muscle and skin was degloved to my shoulder.

My heroes had me in route to UAB’s trauma unit via Life Flight where, again, teams of skilled, talented professionals took charge. Through advanced, state-of-the-art methods, seldom seen by the best doctors worldwide, my arm was rebuilt and repaired down to the very nail tips.

After six weeks of the best care possible anywhere (UAB Acute Trauma Care Unit), my list of heroes was so much longer. I can’t even begin to list the hundreds of caring, selfless acts of love and kindness individually.

While there may never be words invented to express my love and gratitude for my hero-friends, many bring a glimpse of their faces to mind, and a tear of joy to my eyes.

Thanks, I love you all and God’s speed.
